We accompany your ADHD diagnosis
The process of an ADHD diagnosis for adults at GAM Medical usually consists of three 50-minute interviews, the return interview and the final diagnostic interview.
During the free consultation, we will explain the exact procedure for ADHD diagnostics for adults, discuss the costs and answer any other questions you may have.
This gives you a clear overview of the entire process and allows you to plan your diagnostic appointments well informed.
The anamnesis interview serves to comprehensively record your previous experiences, symptoms and personal background in order to create a sound basis for the ADHD diagnosis.
In the in-depth psychological assessment, the development of your ADHD symptoms from childhood to the present day and possible causes for the symptoms are comprehensively examined.
As part of the differential diagnosis, the possibility that other diseases/disorders better explain the symptoms is ruled out, and possible accompanying complaints (comorbidities) are taken into account, as they can exacerbate the symptoms.
As soon as the report has been completed by your psychologist, you will have a personal interview.
In this interview, you will receive the written report back from your psychologist and he/she will explain to you the preliminary result he/she has come to.
In the last appointment, the final diagnostic interview takes place with one of our psychiatrists/psychotherapists. If you have an ADHD diagnosis, you will be issued with a recognized confirmation of diagnosis.
ADHD diagnostics for adults
ADHD diagnosis for adults is initially based on a psychological assessment using a combination of psychometric questionnaires, structured interviews and behavioral observations.
The examinations carried out also include possible concomitant illnesses (comorbidities) in order to better understand you and your person and to be able to help you in the best possible way.
So don’t be surprised if you receive questionnaires or questions in the interview that may not be directly associated with ADHD symptoms.
These are used for differential diagnostics and to identify possible comorbidities, which enables a reliable diagnosis to be made.
Following the diagnostics, the results are summarized by your treating psychologist in a detailed psychological report and discussed in the return interview.
The psychological report contains all the information gathered from the diagnostics as well as individual treatment recommendations.
> Further information on the psychological assessment, the questionnaires used and the diagnostic questionnaires (DIVA-5, SCID) can be found here:
Behavioral observations are used to assess the symptoms of ADHD in various situations based on certain behaviors in conversations or in everyday life.
Such observations can relate, for example, to people appearing unfocused in conversation or being easily distracted.
Behavioral observations are also used by us to detect signs of ADHD that may not have come up in an interview or one of our questionnaires, as these are individual behavior patterns or situational states that a test or single interview question may not capture.
Our ADHD diagnostics are based on a variety of psychometric tests that measure different problem areas. To assess attention, we use a special self-assessment tool that identifies concentration problems.
Behavioral patterns are analyzed using a questionnaire that retrospectively sheds light on childhood behavior. For the emotional state, a test is used that specifically measures depressive symptoms.
Mood is assessed using a checklist that indicates possible signs of hypomania. In addition, a preparatory questionnaire serves as the basis for a subsequent structured interview to examine various personality facets in more detail.
Depending on requirements, we also use tests that analyse characteristics of the autism spectrum as well as empathy and systematization. This comprehensive ADHD diagnosis ensures that not only the ADHD symptoms but also possible accompanying disorders are precisely recorded.
Our psychologists will conduct the semi-structured Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults (DIVA-5) with you. The DIVA-5 is used to systematically record and assess symptoms of ADHD in adults.
For this purpose, the symptoms in childhood are also recorded retrospectively in order to document differences and continuities in ADHD symptoms. In addition, possible comorbid mental disorders that often occur together with ADHD are assessed.
The DIVA-5 is therefore an important instrument for ADHD diagnostics for adults. It enables a structured and comprehensive assessment of the symptoms and their effects, allowing an accurate and reliable diagnosis.
The semi-structured clinical interview for the diagnosis of personality disorders according to the DSM-IV criteria is used for the detailed identification and classification of personality facets.
It enables a comprehensive recording of concise personality traits that play a central role in diagnostic processes.
Before the interview, you will receive the first part of the SKID-2, a questionnaire, together with the other questionnaires.
Your answers form the basis and serve as a process of elimination for the subsequent interview.
ADHD in adulthood can be more difficult to diagnose. The symptoms can be similar to those of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders.
For ADHD diagnosis for adults, the results of the psychological assessment must meet the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) of the American Psychiatric Association, for example. The DSM-5 lists three manifestations of ADHD; inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and the mixed form.
